How to find out whether a particular skincare product will work, or is the marketing team selling piped dreams? How to know whether a brand is genuinely selling natural products or taking you for a ride? How do I know if my current product is working for my skin? Do questions like this riddle you? In this multi-part series, we will help you understand the fundamentals of skincare, which will help you answer all of the above questions and help design a good skincare routine?

Lesson 1: Demand more from your skincare products

In this first part, we talk about the bare minimum job of different skincare products to help you understand what a skincare product is supposed to do and not supposed to do. We hope this will help you design your own step-by-step skincare routine.

I. Cleanser

A cleanser should gently get rid of dirt, pollutants, makeup & excess oil. However, it should NOT leave your skin dry or stretched. If this is the case with you, then you should change your cleanser. If you have dry skin, you should use a cream-based cleanser such as Aminu's Cream Cleanser.

Recommended use: A must in any good skincare routine. Use 2x a day, double cleanse (water + oil) if removing makeup.

II. Exfoliator

An exfoliator should remove dead skin cells & stimulate cells' regeneration to achieve smoother & evenly toned skin. However, whether opting for physical or chemical exfoliant it should not leave you with a sandpaper-like feeling or dryness.

Recommended use: Varies from the skin to skin; talk to us or your skin aesthetician to determine usage. Again a must in any good skincare routine. FAQs on Exfoliation.

III. Cream/Moisturizer

At a bare minimum, a cream or a moisturizer should 1) hydrate, 2) lock in moisture, and 3) protect your skin from free radical damage. Today, most creams also contain active ingredients that work on other concerns such as collagen booster, melanin reduction, etc.

Recommended use: 2x a day - morning (before sunscreen) and night. How to choose the right moisturizer for your skin.

IV. Serums/Oils

They (should) have a high concentration of active ingredients and should repair one or more skin concerns such as pigmentation, acne, scars, enlarged pores, etc.

Recommended use: Varies from serum to serum and skin to skin. Talk to your skin aesthetician or Aminu team to determine usage. Check out Aminu's range of high-performing serums & concentrates.

V. Sunscreen

Its job is to create a film on the skin to prevent UV rays & blue light from penetrating our skin. It should not give you warmth or redness on the skin after application.

Recommended use: Every day (without fail) even if you are not stepping out in the sun. Read about the importance of sunscreen.

VI. Toner / Mist

Their primary function is to hydrate & restore your skin's ideal pH level. After application, some toners may make your skin dry. Avoid the ones that contain drying alcohol.

Recommended use: As and when required.

Let's be honest, not everyone needs all products. To curate a regime that is best suited for you, understand your skin and then figure out what you need. You can also reach out to Aminu's skincare aesthetician team via live chat on our website or drop them an email at care@aminu.life, and their team will help you figure out what is a good skincare routine for you.
